Noni's Political Future In Bui

Editorial….

In the build up to the Senatorial Elections slated for March 12, 2023, every true Noni son and daughter is or should be dwelling on this all important question; “What is the place of Noni in the present political dispensation of Bui?” Recent developments however indicate that some heavyweights on the Noni Political Landscape are not giving it a thought.

Senator Barrister Kinyang George Nyang

As the Twelfth of March draws nigh, indications from trickling messages point to the fact that while some “big minds” in Noni are sincerely focused on retaining some political power, others are still focused on trifles and petit distractions. Noni is still divided into the following categories of people:

Firstly, there are those who sincerely want to bring development to Noni through political choices that assemble the people in their efforts to solve basic problems that they are still suffering from. This category of people are aware that Noni needs electricity, roads(not necessarily good ones), portable drinking water, schools, organised profitable farming, amongst others.

There’s the second category of people who though aware of these problems think that the solutions must only come through them. “If it is not through me, then it’s not going to be through any other person.” This, is the worse category of people in Noni.

There’s yet another category of people in Noni who strongly believe in party politics as the only way forward. To this category of people, development can only come through a specific political party. This approach has proven to be the most destructive of all as it counters all attempts at uniting people. It gives preference to the needs of a Political Party and places them over the needs of Noni. People who place personal political ambitions at the expense of the ambitions of Noni, fall in this category.

Next is that category of people who are full of self importance but do nothing concrete to demonstrate their importance. They abound! All they do is, sit in the comfort of their luxurious ships afloat in the tumultuous sea called Noni and send heat seeking missiles to anyone who proposes something. They deliberately pick out weak spots in  proposals from others and shift the public away from salient points. This destructive category is most active on Social Media. They wait for someone to present a development proposal and they step in like the almighty and all- knowing-God full of that dreaded disease called Superiority Complex and rubbish every development proposal. Curiously, this category of people hardly ever propose anything. Are we this sick?

Let’s take a look at the Geopolitics of Bui. Politicking in the Division has been dominated by the Nso. This is understandable given the size and the superior human resource and stronger sense of unity among the Nso people. Fonka Shang Lawrence of blessed memory was the House Speaker in Parliament (correct me if I am wrong). Ma Emma Lafon has been in the Upper House or the Senate. The legendary Wirba and many others have been in Parliament. The list is too long. They merit it because they are united and are prepared to fight for their interests.

Hon. Emma Lafon

In second position comes the Oku. Presently Oku-Noni is represented in Parliament by a Parliamentarian from Oku. That's ok or is it? Pah Fai Yengo Francis has been Governor in a couple of Regions in the country including the Littoral Region from where he retired though presently still a major player in the politics of Bui and the North West Region. This is because the people in Oku know that they need to stick together, throw their weight behind their own power brokers and bring development. The results are there. Pah Philemon Yang received the support of “all” Oku people political affiliations not withstanding. Take a look at Elak Oku! The road that runs through Ebal Oku up to Tolon and to Elak is “tarred” and there’s electricity with all the services that come with it.  This is what happens when people recognize and jointly protect what they have.

Some Noni sons of course succeeded to  reach the limelight but not necessarily through politics. In recent times, Nformi Alfred Forgwei (may his gentle soul rest in peace) erstwhile Director of the Cameroon Shipping Yard popularly known as Chantier Naval, Senator Barrister Kinyang George Nyang presently Senator from the North West Region are some that we can mention. Harry Lanyuy presently the SDO of Upper Nkam Division with seat in Bafang was the first Noni son to occupy the post of Senior Divisional Officer. The key question is, how much support has Noni people given these personalities. The greatest criticisms that have ever been directed at these people have come from one of that category of Noni people mentioned above.

Let’s take a look at the recent message sent out by Senator Barrister Kinyang George Nyang. The quintessence of the message was that Noni people should protect what is theirs. That there should be some power leverage in Bui Division. With Noni holding onto the position of a Senator, it’s problems would be better presented and followed up.

The second ingredient of the Senator’s message was the progress of the electrification process of Noni and the fact that the first phase would round up in March with the electrification of Din- Bamti stretch(correct me if I am wrong here). The message might have had its flaws but the most important components were praise worthy.

Next development worthy of being mentioned here was a message from Nfon Nkwantè which was also understood out of context. This message simply drew attention to the fact that he didn’t present a Senatorial list at the CPDM Central Committee and that the Senator might have been misinformed in this regard. The message from Nfon Nkwantè Dr. Nfii Ndikintum never indicated that he was against Senator Kinyang George Nyang's bid to be re-elected in the Upper House (Senate). He was simply stating the truth which should be characteristic of any true leader.

The message from Nfon Nkwantè did not cancel the truth or facts which were carried in the message of Senator Barrister Kinyang George Nyang. The facts he stated were that Noni needed to protect what they had. The only thing that Noni has now is the Senatorial Seat. Party Politics is never going to help Noni to maintain that Senatorial seat. This was the quintessence of the Senator’s message.

Noni like the rest of Bui should team up and follow development irrespective of where it comes from.

Noni should therefore highlight the good qualities that are found amongst them and move forward in honesty. Question “Is Noni’s political future in the hands of any political party?” Your guess is as good as mine.
