Abominations In Noni

The Noni Story III

Much more responsible behaviour is expected from title holders. As a result, any titled person is not permitted to move out without putting on a skull cap. The posture of a titled person in public is that of a disciplined, well behaved person who is in turn well respected by the general public and cannot receive a handshake from anyone. The cap which is traditionally produced from local material is supposed to be worn as prescribed. The Title holder is not supposed to expose himself in public carelessly. If he does, it is an abomination. When an individual sits and crosses his legs in front of a titled person, it is considered an abomination. When an individual sees a chief and turns his back against him, it is considered an abomination. When a glass of water or drink is held in the left hand it is considered an abomination. It is the same with food. It should not be eaten with the left hand. When this occurs, it is considered an abomination.

Incest is considered an abomination in Noni land. Siblings and relatives can’t have sexual intercourse with each other.

Belonging to certain institutions means adhering to certain rules and regulations. Failure to do this is considered an abomination. If drinks are supposed to be provided for a gathering by an individual and he fails in this duty, it is considered an abomination.

Sometimes people who commit abominations are verbally warned. At times they may be made to pay a fine. Other punishments include stopping people from talking to the defaulter, banishing the concerned party from the land. If the defaulter is allowed to stay in the village he will be avoided by everyone and no one will have any dealings with him. No body talks to such a person until certain conditions are fulfilled. If the defaulter happens to be a chief or a titled person he may just disappear.

When a defaulter is being sent away, the number of rivers that he must cross are always clearly defined. Sometimes they are told to cross seven rivers before settling. This usually means that the concerned person should not settle any where near. The number of rivers to be crossed is usually determined by the magnitude of the transgression committed. Sometimes the crimes are related to witchcraft.

It is traditional in Some parts of Sub Saharan Africa to have what is referred in parts of Eastern Nigeria as the Evil Forest where unwanted criminals and witches are sent to. Though it may not be true for Noni, some palaces in Noni have Sacred Forests. According to Wifoke Joseph, an elite from Tfuh (Mbinon), all the Palaces in Tfuh have Sacred Forests. Nothing is supposed to be cut or harvested from that Forest. Even firewood is needed and there’s a dried piece of wood in that Forest, nobody is permitted to touch it. These sacred untouched forests have turned out to be a reflection of what the land originally looked like.

A lot of deforestation has occurred in the surrounding lands and these sacred Forests stand out like a Geographical History Book with very huge old trees that have attained gigantic dimensions over the years. When a tree falls there due to wind or climate related reasons, no one touches it. According to Wifoke Joseph of Enteh in Tfuh, the content of Folktale reveal that in the past, unwanted people in the community were sent there. Nobody was permitted to go there and anyone who went there never returned. Spiritually prepared people took care of people who were expelled to these forests and no one can say with certainty what occurred to those who were unfortunate enough to be sent there.
