DADA Women's National Congress

DADA Women Usher in New Phase in The Development of Djottin

In the maiden edition of the DADA Women’s National Congress which held in Douala on Saturday March 4, 2023, Djottin Women under the guidance of the DADA National President Mary Magdalen Tar Nyanyoh have unanimously expressed their desire to insert an extra flame in the development issues of Djottin. The respective Regional Presidents of the women’s wing of DADA pledged to throw their weight behind efforts geared towards putting in place stronger structures to take care of the activities of women within the umbrella structure known by the acronym DADA.

DADA National President's Speech

In a welcome address presented by the host DADA Littoral President Fanka Secunda, the women were called upon to adhere to unity and collective growth. Fanka Secunda urged them to encourage positive energy, warmth and love. They were urged to be supportive with collective growth as the defining modus operandi.

The DADA National President on her part harped on the irreplaceable place of the woman in the development of Djottin pointing to the impressive turnout as testimony to the determination of the woman to take part in Djottin's development. She identified comparison as one of the biggest problems among Djottin women and drew their attention to the importance of self respect and dignity in the life of every woman. She further called on them to be protective and loving towards their husbands reminding them they stood the risk of losing their husbands where they didn’t take good care of them.
Womens said should always occupy themselves with an occupation to earn a living.

The greatest emphasis however was placed on the need to take care of very young girls back home whom she said we’re delivering children at an alarming rate. She admonished the throngs of women who turned out for the event to contribute towards changing the situation of young girls back home. “Let’s take the lead in them out of the vicious cycle. Let’s be collective in our approach towards solving problems. Forward ever, backward never” she emphasized. Mary Magdalene Tah Nyanyoh, further thanked Reverend Sister Caroline Fon for her constant support and prayers.

Reports were filed in by the various DADA Women Regional Presidents. Lucy Bih from Buea, Madam Nfon Bridget from Limbe, Shey Comfort Njoh Joint President for the Center Region, Fanka Secunda, Joint President for Littoral and Victorian Tata from Bamenda were among those who presented Regional Reports. Apart from Douala and Yaounde where there already existed well defined female DADA structures, the other Regional Presidents promised to renew their effort towards reorganizing the structures in their various regions.

One of the highlights of the day was an elective exercise into four key positions. Kongnyuy Lucy was elected into the office of National Coordinator of DADA Women. Madam Nfon Bridget was elected as National Treasurer. The post of Financial Secretary went to Camella while the post of Public Relations Officer went to Mary Ndi.

Another important item was the fund raising exercise which saw a massive participation of Djottin people from across the country. This important exercise saw Mr. Kelesen Emmanuel from Edea sitting as Chairman. Meantime, Senator for Bui, Barrister Kinyang George Nyang was represented at the event by Barrister Honoratus Ndi. This reporter caught up with the DADA National President, Mary Magdalene Tah Nyanyoh who expressed her feelings in the following manner:

“I am so elated to see my ladies promising that they want to start their own branches thanks to the steam that has been coming from those that are already existing. Immediately we finish from this Congress, I will do a schedule to visit those that do not yet have a Women’s branch and install their structures to function. I will have to be cajoling the skeptical ones to see the good in having a women’s wing. I will make them understand that DADA is already up and moving. I think some of them have been skeptical because of past experiences but with the present resurfacing determination amongst the women, they will certainly begin to see the importance of belonging. We will continue to encourage by giving productive projects. When we execute productive projects they will pick up interest. The central message in my keynote speech today was for the ladies to take care of their kids and not abandon them. Many of them are having teenage pregnancies just because their elder brothers and sisters in town cannot take care of them. I was really talking to the women in particular to take care of their children. Even those who have given birth at an early age should not be abandoned because they still have something positive in them. If they are trained to pick up some skills, they will be able to take care of their needs.

The men should know that they remain the pillar of DADA. The fact that the women are coming up is to show them that we are ready to support them. They should not abandon DADA to us. They are and will remain our men and we will continue to respect them and give them that central point as men. We will continue to support them. Djottin women also want to be the bread winners in the family but they don’t want to overshadow their men in any way. We are therefore calling on all the men to join us especially the young men. Some of them in the cities are not registered in DADA. We are encouraging them to register and join us in our efforts.”

The newly elected National Coordinator of DADA Women Kongnyuy Lucy also expressed her feelings following her election in the following words:

“My being elected really came as a surprise. I wasn’t really expecting it. I want to thank all the women for the confidence they have placed in me. I count on their support in carrying out the duties that they have conferred on me. I am a leader not because I am more intelligent but because I have all of them.

National Coordinator

Without them I will be empty but now I am strong because of them. Because of them, I am not empty. Their ideas will strengthen me for the tasks ahead. I surrender myself to the services that I have to offer them.

There’s a new drive and desire to revamp the women’s wing of DADA. I am happy with this new drive. I am inspired by the drive of the DADA National President Mary Magdalene Tah. Having chosen me as the National Coordinator for the Women’s wing of DADA, I will follow her example which has been really ground breaking. Her “forward ever, backward never” approach will certainly give a new face to the image of Djottin. To the wonderful Djottin women who have chosen me, I will not fail them. Let them support me and work with me and I will not fail them.”
