"We Advocate That Nurses be Appointed To Leadership Positions"
–Nkwain Joseph, President of Cameroon Nurses Association
Mr. Nkwain Joseph, President of the Cameroon Nurses Association has stated that with an intention of influencing policy, CNA has been advocating that nurses be appointed in key leadership positions at the Ministry of Public Health. He made this declaration during the 10th Scientific Conference of the Cameroon Nurses Association that took place recently in Bamenda at the Epic Events Center under the theme “Investing in the Nursing Profession.”
This advocacy he said has been paying off and
a nurse whom he referred to as “our chief nursing officer” is already a Sub-director
in the Ministry of Public Health. Mr. Nkwain Joseph also intimated that a
former Vice President of CNA had occupied the post of Inspector General in the
Ministry of Public Health adding that there were many nurse leaders presently
acting as Heads of Departments of nursing in various universities in Cameroon.
The
Cameroon Nurses Association he said works closely with National and
International Nursing Associations adding that CNA is one of the 35 national
nurses associations that makes up the Commonwealth Nurses and Midwives
Federation. CNA he said is also a member of the West African Region comprising
of Cameroon, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Mr. Nkwain Joseph summed up the
international networking of CNA in the following words:
“We
have been networking with Ghana Registered Nurses Association, Singapore Nurses
Association, Trained Nurses Association of India, Canadian Nurses Association,
Nursing and Midwifery Council U.K. The CNA president further said the
association has been confirming the registration of its members in USA, Canada,
U.K., Nigeria, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, South Africa amongst others.
The
CNA President further intimated that a Strategic Plan from 2021 to 2025 had
been adopted and thanked Mr. Atongno Humphrey and his team of the Douala branch
for this achievement. The Strategic Plan he said included National Impact,
Membership Empowerment, Strategic Leadership, Innovative Growth, Accountability
and Professional Nursing Practice.
An Elective
General Assembly the President said had not been previewed and elections could
not take place this year “because 90% of those who plan to vote and be voted
have not paid their annual dues up till date.” He called on members to update
their dues “in preparation for elections unfailingly next year 2024.”
Revisiting
the aims of the Cameroon Nurses Association, Mr. Nkwain Joseph said the aim of
CNA was to contribute to the improvement of the health of citizens by fostering
nursing education, research, care and management.
Small
wonder that with these lofty goals the membership of CNA has steadily grown and
now stands at 4500 spread all over the national territory and abroad.
The
two day Scientific Conference ended on a positive note with very rich
presentations from seasoned Professors and health professionals. The average
nurse left this year’s Scientific Conference better armed to brace challenges
of the future.
