Nfon Nkwantè Ushers in New Era in Noni

Reinvigorates Drive Towards Unity !

By Francis Ekongang Nzante

After conferring the title of “NFon of the Diaspora” upon Dr. Nfii Ndikintum Kangong by King Makers in Djottin, the whole of Noni from every indication is moving towards unity at an unprecedented pace.

This has been enhanced by the warm reception given to the illustrious son's new status as Nfon Nkwantè (Ruler in the Diaspora) by “the entire Noni”.

This fresh move towards unity in Noni has been further enhanced by the all inclusive and embracing attitude of Nfon Nkwantè Noni.

This new bearer of a Royal Staff in Noni is interestingly attracted to development initiatives. It is an attitude that Noni as a people has not failed to appreciate.

Nfon of Laan and Nfon Nkwantè

Speaking recently during the visit of the Nfon of Laan in Yaounde, Shey Peter Mabu, a respected elite from Noni called upon the maiden “Nfon of the Diaspora” or Nfon Nkwantè to remember that his duty as a leader in the Diaspora covered the whole of Noni and not just Djottin. Shey Peter Mabu stated unequivocally that “you are a Nfon for all the Noni people. Assembled here today are people from Laan, Nkor and other villages…and the Nfon of Laan is here today because he wants development. You have been given this responsible position because you are capable of assembling Noni people in the Diaspora. Those who conferred this title upon you are aware of that.”

Another highlight of the visit of the Nfon of Laan was the royal blessings and recognition accorded to Nfon Nkwantè Noni.

Dr. Nfii Ndikintum Kangong, the maiden Nfon Nkwantè Noni expressed his feelings on this important occasion in the following manner;

“While growing up I never knew that there were different villages in Noni. Infact it never occurred to me because as a child I remember them going to Nshii Noni. Let me emphasise here that Noni is one.  I grew up knowing Pah Maison, Pah Cyprain Firsiy and Shey Peter Mabu as uncles…..As I grew up I began to learn that Noni had different villages. There’s absolutely no reason for us to divide ourselves in little pockets. Noni is one. I am really honoured to know that Noni is entrusting me with the responsibility to be their representative and I am equally thankful to the Nfon for everything.”

During the Fund Raising Event organised by the Din Development Association DDA  at Carrefour Obili in Yaounde on Saturday the 26th of November, Nfon Nkwantè made an appearance and as a true Noni son and in keeping with the attitude of a true leader chipped in his support for the project which is geared towards the provision of portable drinking water in some parts of Din.

Mr. Ngong Gilbert Nkongnyoh

Speaking during this event, elites from Din acknowledged and appreciated the presence of Nfon Nkwantè Noni.

This reporter caught up with Mr. Ngong Gilbert Nkongnyoh, National President of DDA and he expressed his feelings in the following manner;

“The main reason for this meeting is the scarcity of drinking water in some parts of Din. Some Communities still depend on rivers and streams for water. This sometimes lead to the spread of water borne diseases especially among children. We feel that it is necessary to assemble resources and extend the water supply network to communities that have not yet had water. This water project started in 2009. We intended to have water by gravity but we found out that it was very expensive to get the equipment that could pump water from the streams to the hilltops.

Taps needing Rehabilitation in Parts of Din

Knowing that water catchment areas are very scarce, we are trying to build more water storage tanks. We have tried to create an alliance with the Mbessa Community who have a lot of water catchment areas in their forests. They gave us a source which we have used and built a water reserve tank. The problem however is that during the dry season it is difficult to get water. We are therefore still negotiating with them to get more water sources from where we can tap water and keep in our storage tanks so that in the dry season we can still have a good quantity of water to supply to the communities. There’s reasonable progress but the main problem is that resources are coming in piece meal. That’s why since 2009 we are still struggling with water.

There are also other pressing projects which took precedence over water like electricity and we already have a trunk line cutting across from Tolon through Din, Ngai to Bamti.

The message I have for the Noni people is that of Unity, love and hard work. If we bring this spirit of unity in all development initiatives in Noni then Noni will develop really faster.

The Nfon Nkwantè initiative is very wonderful. In the Noni culture NFons stay in the Palace. If they go out and stay for too long they may even end up finding it difficult to get back to the palace. So in order to stretch their powers out of the village and in the Diaspora a Nfon Nkwantè has been empowered to take care of Noni in the Diaspora.”

This fund raising occasion caught the attention of Noni people from all the villages. It is indeed a new era in Noni.
