The Importance of Money Transfers To Women Working Abroad For Family Support Back Home

Image
By Imane   Charioui - Director of Francophone Africa , WorldRemit .   In Sub-Saharan Africa, women make up approximately 47% of the migrant population , forming a significant source of remittances. While this responsibility comes with an immense potential consequence, it is also an opportunity to enrich the lives of many around them.   In many cases, remittances support families, households, and communities across Cameroon by helping them meet their educational, health and security needs.  The remittance-sending behavior of migrant women often incurred a higher financial cost compared to male senders as they tend to remit smaller amounts of their income, more frequently and are therefore subject to paying more in transaction fees.   A study by United Nations Women suggests that women migrant workers are concentrated in sectors less vulnerable to financial crises and economic downturns, such as domestic work, meaning their remittances are more stab...

Desperate Victims Of the Seven Year Old Anglophone Crisis!

Image
The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon has been raging on for seven years and counting. But while the war rages on, the amount of attention that has been given to its unfortunate victims has increasingly been on the decline. Many desperate victims have been caught in the web of the war in various and different ways. While a good chunk of them escaped into neighbouring Nigeria, many have escaped to Europe and the Americas and many of them have died in the process due to the precarious conditions under which they travel. Examples of desperate victims of the Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon abound. This article is inspired by the difficult situation in which the residents of "Ground Zero" usually find themselves because of the uncompromising stance of both the Government of Cameroon and the Separatists. On the 4 th of November 2022, some administrative authorities amongst whom were Mr. Adolphe Lele l'Afrique, Governor of North West Region, Mr. Achobong Paul, City  Mayor of  th...

Traditional Customs and Christianity in Noni

Image
The Noni Story IV As a result of the sprinklings of people who came in from different places it greatly affected the traditional centralized ancestral religious practice. Traditional Religions were as such much more easily replaced by Christianity. The Catholic, Baptist and to a lesser extent the Presbyterian Churches practically swept through   Noni almost completely replacing its Traditional Religions and Practices. It is almost impossible to find a poligamous family in Noni because of their Christianity. Shey George Forgwei, a Noni elite from Nkor who was conferred with the title Shey Wu Ntvu (Treasurer of the Palace) by the Nfon of Mbin sheds light on the situation in the following words: “I am a Christian but this does not prevent me from being a traditionalist. Being a Christian and at the same time respecting tradition is not contradictory. That’s why I am a Shey Wu Ntvu and I belong to a Mfu, of Mnjeivu .” Every group of people who came into Noni came in with...

Remittances helping bridge the gender inequality divide in Cameroon

Image
Cameroon is currently ranked 141 st out of 189 countries on gender equality, with gender-based discrimination against women and girls being extremely apparent throughout much of the country.               Across Cameroon, just 32.5% of women have some level of secondary school education , while only 1.6% of women own a property title in their name despite them making up 71.6% of the workers in the informal agricultural sector. Overall, women's and girls’ woes are driven by multidimensional poverty . According to the World Bank, the number of people living in poverty in Cameroon has risen since 2007, and the ongoing cost of living crisis is expected to worsen the national inflation levels. However, international remittances are providing a positive solution, helping to alleviate the financial divide. As per the World Bank, remittances allow lower income households to improve children’s health and educational outcomes, in addition to increasin...

Abominations In Noni

The Noni Story III Much more responsible behaviour is expected from title holders. As a result, any titled person is not permitted to move out without putting on a skull cap. The posture of a titled person in public is that of a disciplined, well behaved person who is in turn well respected by the general public and cannot receive a handshake from anyone. The cap which is traditionally produced from local material is supposed to be worn as prescribed. The Title holder is not supposed to expose himself in public carelessly. If he does, it is an abomination. When an individual sits and crosses his legs in front of a titled person, it is considered an abomination. When an individual sees a chief and turns his back against him, it is considered an abomination. When a glass of water or drink is held in the left hand it is considered an abomination. It is the same with food. It should not be eaten with the left hand. When this occurs, it is considered an abomination. Incest is considered...
